Hans Stöckli has been Central President of Alzheimer Switzerland since June 2024. The lawyer with his own law firm was elected to the city council of Biel/Bienne for the Social Democratic Party in 1979. He entered politics full-time in 1990 and was Finance Director and Mayor of Biel/Bienne until 2010. In 2002, he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Berne and was a member of the National Council from 2004 to 2010. In 2011, he was elected to the Council of States, of which he was President in 2019/20. In the Council of States, he dealt with health policy as a member of the Committee for Social Security and Health SGK-S. He also founded the Parliamentary Group on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in order to anchor health promotion and prevention in Swiss politics in the long term.
