Belgium - Flanders

Introduction

The Flanders' dementia plan was renewed launched on 20 September 2021 and will run until 2025.

It builds upon the the previous two Dementia Plans (2010-2014 and 2016-2019) was complemented by a Flemish government campaign to establish a different view of dementia and to put the person with dementia in the spotlight (Forget Dementia Remember the Person).

Outline of the strategy

The strategy outlined action under seven areas to improve the experience of people living with dementia in Flanders:

  1. Prevalence of persons with dementia
  2. Prevention: preventing dementia
  3. Optimising quality of care by (future) healthcare professionals and volunteers
  4. Improving person-centred support
  5. Optimising specific informal care support
  6. Further propagating a nuanced perception: Forget dementia, remember the person
  7. Developing a specific target group policy

A monitoring committee will monitor the progress semi-annually, with representatives of the Ministry of Welfare, Public Health and Family, the Agency for Care and Health, the Dementia Expertise Center Flanders and the regional expertise centres, the Alzheimer's League Flanders, the Flemish working group of persons with dementia, and the Flemish Council for the Elderly.
