Introduction

The Cyprus National Action Plan on Dementia ran between 2012 and 2017.

The Cyprus Alzheimer Association worked with the Ministry of Health, particularly through the Multidisciplinary Committee on Alzheimer's, strongly advocating for the development of a national plan dedicated to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

Outline of Strategy

Influenced by the World Health Organization (WHO) literature on dementia, the plan identified four pillars on which the strategy would be based:

  1. Prevention
  2. Early Diagnosis and treatment
  3. Patient care and support for caregivers
  4. Research

In addition to these pillars, the strategy explores some of the more specific challenges faced by people with dementia and their carers, with 11 sections in the strategy, addressing societal, clinical and research areas. These areas include:

  1. Primary care
  2. Appropriate treatment
  3. Care in the community (including care coordination, technology etc)
  4. Awareness raising
  5. Involvement of the community, volunteers, patients and families
  6. Defining national policy, programmes and legislation
  7. Training for health professionals
  8. Interconnection with other sectors
  9. Health monitoring in the community
  10. Strengthening and promoting research in Cyprus
  11. Strengthening volunteering
