The objectives of the Alzheimer's Association are, according to its statutes, to support and assist people with dementia and their carers.

  • To raise awareness of dementia in general.
  • To inform and cooperate with national and local politicians, other authorities and associations.
  • To promote research and development into these illnesses.
  • To defend the legal rights of those affected.
  • To participate in international cooperation.

This is how we work to achieve our aims:

We support and help people with dementia and their carers:

  • e.g. through carer groups and the Dementia Line.

We raise awareness of dementia:

  • Through the Alzheimer's Association's website and Facebook page, at awareness events, and by organising lectures and conferences.
  • On World Alzheimer's Day, 21 September, the association organises a major event, which often features lectures. The Faroese Broadcasting Corporation also shows films and/or programmes about dementia, and the Mylnan bakery often sells memory cakes, with the proceeds going to the association.
  • In addition, the association makes a big deal of its annual general meeting, which is usually held in March. An annual report on the association's activities is produced each year.

We inform and collaborate with national and local politicians by:

  • maintaining regular and personal contact with politicians.
  • writing submissions on legislative proposals, letters to the editor, etc.
  • to maintain good and regular communication with authorities in the field of dementia. For example, there is an annual meeting with the Dementia Clinic at the National Hospital, and the association also takes steps to arrange meetings with relevant authorities as required.

We promote research and development into dementia by:

  • implementing surveys and research projects
  • providing financial support for research projects

We protect the legal rights of people with dementia by:

  • advocating when citizens with dementia are subjected to injustice
  • informing people with dementia and their carers about their rights

We participate in international cooperation in the following ways:

  • The Alzheimer's Society collaborates with the Alzheimer's societies in the Nordic countries, for example by participating in the annual Nordic meeting.
