The Dementia in Europe Yearbook 2025, " Transport and access to cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport" examines the subjects of transport and access to cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport and is the first report of Alzheimer Europe to be dedicated specifically to these topics. However, some of Alzheimer Europe's previous work has overlapped with these areas which in the process, has helped to identify relevant initiatives and themes, including:
• The Dementia in Europe Yearbook 2015 “Is Europe becoming more dementia-friendly?”
• The Dementia in Europe Yearbook 2021 “Dementia-inclusive communities and initiatives across Europe”.
• Guidelines on Inclusive Travel and Meetings for People with Dementia 2023.
In discussions with both the European Working Group of People with Dementia (EWGPWD) and the European Dementia Carers Working Group (EDCWG), as well as during the development of the Dementia in Europe Yearbook 2024 on Independent Living and Housing, two key issues emerged: transport and access to recreation, leisure, and cultural activities.
Building on this, the Dementia in Europe Yearbook 2025 will assess the extent to which dementia-specific or relevant policies, initiatives, programmes, or publications exist in relation to transport, as well as access to cultural life, recreation, leisure, and sport. A key focus will be examining the implementation of the EU Disability Card and EU Parking Card, alongside national equivalents, to understand how they apply to people with dementia.
The Yearbook aims to provide a comprehensive snapshot of the current state of affairs across Europe, showcasing exemplary laws, policies, and practices. It will also reflect the experiences of people with dementia, their families, and carers through testimonies from the EWGPWD and EDCWG. Additionally, the Yearbook will offer targeted recommendations for European and national policymakers, addressing gaps in both policy and practice.
