Research Projects

This database contains information on EU funded dementia research projects, undertaken since 2007. It is the product of a mapping exercise of European funding programmes for dementia research conducted by Alzheimer Europe in 2020. This database is not an exhaustive resource of information. It contains information about dementia research projects that are funded by European programmes including FP7, H2020, IMI, JPND, AAL and the third EU Health programme. The mapping exercise and database were expanded in 2025, to include projects funded under Horizon Europe (including IHI). For these projects, the database reports the maximum contribution from the European Commission rather than the total project budget, so funding figures may not be directly comparable across all entries.

Identification of the process by which patients recall and UPDATE their subjective RISK assessments for various diseases to incorporate objective genetic risk information

RISK-UPDATE

Project RISK-UPDATE will support the reintegration of Dr Talya Miron-Shatz, after four years spent as post-doctoral research collaborator with Nobel Laureate Prof. Daniel Kahneman at Princeton University, in the USA. Dr Miron-Shatz’s new host institution is Ono Academic College, Israel, which has agreed to set up a new research centre to facilitate...

Impact of neuronal exosomes-delivered microRNA and proteins on the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease

EMIRAD

'Exosomes are small vesicles which mediate cell-cell communication by transporting across the extracellular environment specific “packages” of RNA and proteins. Importantly, exosomes carry translation initiation factors (TIFs) and miRNAs, a class of short non-coding RNAs with regulatory activity on the expression of the transcriptome of a cell. In...

IMplementation of quality indicators in PAlliative Care sTudy

IMPACT

New knowledge is not necessarily readily applied in medicine, even when there is evidence of its effectiveness. As a result of the gap between knowing and doing, policy makers, professional care providers, patients and their families have benefited too little from new developments. Implementation research has developed models for stepwise...

Improving health services for European citizens with dementia: Development of best practice strategies for the transition from ambulatory to institutional long-term care facilities

RIGHTTIMEPLACECARE

Given the increasing number of patients/consumers with dementia, political action is urgently required to prepare the health care services throughout Europe to deliver cost effective high quality long-term care to people concerned. Currently there is a lack of clinical research data of patients/consumers and informal caregivers to develop best...

Improving Translational Research Potential at the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville

ITRIBIS

The ITRIBIS project is envisaged to improve research at the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS) and to help this center to become a reference of biomedical translational research applied to prevalent diseases in Southern Europe. It also aims to boosting the transfer of results to the clinical setting and to the local biotechnological...

Infrastructure-based EGNOS/Galileo receiver for personal mobility

IEGLO

The main goal of the proposed project IEGLO is the development of a handheld tracking device for elderly or Alzheimer disease people. At present, in Europe approximately 4.000.000 people are Alzheimer disease-ridden. Especially this people get very often in situations where they are un-oriented. They need mentoring by either their family members or...

Initial Training Network for Neurogical disorders orchestrated by cytoKines

NEUROKINE

Neuroinflammatory disease, in particular multiple sclerosis affects more than 700.000 people within Europe alone. European countries are at the forefront of neuroimmunological research and students in medicine and biology are greatly attracted by the field. Neuroimmunology research further impacts our understanding of the ethiopathology of other...

Innovative Midlife Intervention for Dementia deterrence

IN-MINDD

The European costs of dementia were estimated €177 billion and there is a growing gap between burden and budget. The debilitation associated with dementia makes it the most feared of conditions related to ageing . Modelling studies have estimated that if obesity rates dropped by 5%, dementia prevalence rates would be lower by 6% and a decline in...

Investigation of Beta-Amyloid Peptide Effects On Mitochondria Protein Homeostasis: From Pathogenesis to Therapy of Alzheimer Disease

MITOABETA

Beta-amyloid peptide, a component of senile plaques and generated by proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), is a key factor in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease (AD). Beta-amyloid peptide has been shown to influence negatively some important mitochondrial activities such as reducing the efficiency of ATP-production via...
