In sickness and in health
by Bálint Szajki
"In Sickness and in Health” is a deeply intimate photo essay by Bálint Szajki that challenges the stigma surrounding dementia. Through the story of Marika and Sándor, a couple married for more than sixty years, the work reveals the quiet strength, devotion, and enduring love that persist despite illness. Szajki documents the emotional and physical demands of caregiving, showing that tenderness and respect remain stronger than decline. His photographs expose the often unseen realities of ageing and dementia while celebrating perseverance, empathy, and connection. The series invites viewers to see dementia not as an ending, but as an expression of love and humanity.
"My intention was to show that behind the struggles of dementia lies a deep and enduring love that proves love and respect are stronger than any barriers"
