For the past four years, students from a university in Florida (USA) have been visiting Thessaloniki (Greece) as part of an educational initiative to explore the work and facilities of the Greek Association of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (Alzheimer Hellas). These visits have included guided tours to Alzheimer Hellas’ units such as its day care centres “Agia Eleni”, “Agios Ioannis”, and the “Panagia Glykophilousa” residential facility. During their visit this year, on 15-16 June, the students were introduced to the association’s operational model, therapeutic programme, and holistic approach to dementia care.

Staff members provided detailed explanations of the cognitive interventions offered, as well as the strategies used in managing and supporting patients with Alzheimer’s disease. At the end of each visit, students were asked to create a presentation reflecting on their experience and to offer suggestions or ideas for future improvements. Overall, the feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive and underlined that Alzheimer Hellas was the best of the five NGOs they had visited. They expressed great interest in the organisation’s methodology, the professionalism and dedication of the staff, not to mention the warm hospitality. These annual visits serve as a valuable opportunity for cross-cultural exchange and the promotion of best practices in dementia care.
