On 26 March, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI), and the All-Party Oireachtas Group on Dementia, led Dementia Workshops at Leinster House, the seat of Ireland's Parliament in Dublin. The event brought together advocates, policymakers, and ASI staff to explore the latest developments in dementia support, including the role of Dementia Advisers, community-based services, and advancements in disease-modifying therapies. The ASI is grateful to Senator Fiona O’Loughlin, Chair of the All-Party Oireachtas Group on Dementia, for her ongoing support. The event featured key insights from ASI staff and valuable video address and contribution from Global Dementia Ambassador and ASI Board Member, Helen Rochford-Brennan. The workshop was also attended by members of the Irish Dementia Working Group, the Dementia Carers Campaign Network and the Dementia Research Advisory Team.
The ASI extends a heartfelt thank you to Gerry Paley, Nuala Paley, Frank Golden, Jackie Golden, Kevin Cullen, Brenda Buckley, Susan Crampton and Aisling Harmon for their contributions on the day. The workshop saw strong cross-party engagement, with over 80 attendees, including ministers, TDs (members of the Irish Parliament), and senators. It highlighted the urgent need for continued investment in dementia support services across Ireland— a priority that resonates across Europe as countries strive to create more dementia-inclusive societies. Since its formation in 2016, the All-Party Oireachtas Group on Dementia has been a vital platform for raising awareness and fostering cross-party collaboration. As new TDs and senators join, the group’s role in shaping future policy and securing necessary resources remains crucial. Looking ahead, The ASI is committed to working alongside policymakers and its European colleagues to improve outcomes for people living with dementia and their family carers.
