Research Projects

This database contains information on EU funded dementia research projects, undertaken since 2007. It is the product of a mapping exercise of European funding programmes for dementia research conducted by Alzheimer Europe in 2020. This database is not an exhaustive resource of information. It contains information about dementia research projects that are funded by European programmes including FP7, H2020, IMI, JPND, AAL and the third EU Health programme. The mapping exercise and database were expanded in 2025, to include projects funded under Horizon Europe (including IHI). For these projects, the database reports the maximum contribution from the European Commission rather than the total project budget, so funding figures may not be directly comparable across all entries.

Connecting neuronal network activity with regional specificity for Alzheimer pathology: a multi-modal neuroimaging approach

CONNECT

As the world’s population is aging, the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is estimated to triple by 2050. Even though AD was identified more than 100 years ago, research has gained momentum only the last 30 years. To date, studies have mainly focused on the accumulation of two proteins, amyloid-beta and tau to understand the pathophysiology of...

Connecting to the Networks of the Human Brain

ConnectToBrain

ConnectToBrain will introduce whole-brain multi-locus transcranial magnetic stimulation (mTMS), in which the brain-stimulating electric-field location, direction, magnitude and timing are controlled electronically based on real-time high-density electroencephalography (hdEEG) information of activity and connectivity in brain networks. The final...

Control of amyloid formation via beta-hairpin molecular recognition features

BETACONTROL

The aggregation of proteins into amyloid fibrils is involved in various diseases which place a high burden on patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare systems, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and type 2 diabetes. While the therapeutic potential of the inhibition of amyloid formation and spreading has been recognized, there...

Control of cerebral blood flow by capillary pericytes in health and disease

BrainEnergy

Pericytes, located at intervals along capillaries, have recently been revealed as major controllers of brain blood flow. Normally, they dilate capillaries in response to neuronal activity, increasing local blood flow and energy supply. But in pathology they have a more sinister role. After artery block causes a stroke, the brain suffers from the...

Critical solutions for elderly well-being

RISE-WELL

Mental health and emotional well-being during old age (60\) should be regarded as important as at any other time of a persons’ life. Older people are more likely to experience events that affect emotional well-being, such as bereavement or disability. Unfortunately, mental health problems are under identified in older people, whom themselves are...

Deciphering ubiquitin-dependent regulation of Golgi homeostasis control in neurodegeneration

UbiGolD

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder which affects 47 million patients worldwide. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms leading to sporadic-AD remain unknown and preventive treatment is not yet available. Lately, the ubiquitin-proteasome system has been implicated in AD. Dr. Merbl’s laboratory recently...

Deep-Learning and HPC to Boost Biomedical Applications for Health

DeepHealth

Health scientific discovery and innovation are expected to quickly move forward under the so called “fourth paradigm of science”, which relies on unifying the traditionally separated and heterogeneous high-performance computing and big data analytics environments. Under this paradigm, the DeepHealth project will provide HPC computing power at the...

Dementia modelling

DEMO

Dementia constitutes a major burden on society, both in monetary costs and the suffering of patients and their relatives. It comprises a number of diseases including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD). In recent years, imaging biomarkers have been developed including measures of brain morphology (MRI T1), vascular pathologies (MRI...
