Research Projects

This database contains information on EU funded dementia research projects, undertaken since 2007. It is the product of a mapping exercise of European funding programmes for dementia research conducted by Alzheimer Europe in 2020. This database is not an exhaustive resource of information. It contains information about dementia research projects that are funded by European programmes including FP7, H2020, IMI, JPND, AAL and the third EU Health programme. The mapping exercise and database were expanded in 2025, to include projects funded under Horizon Europe (including IHI). For these projects, the database reports the maximum contribution from the European Commission rather than the total project budget, so funding figures may not be directly comparable across all entries.

BRain Imaging, cognition, Dementia and next generation GEnomics: a Transdisciplinary approach to search for risk and protective factors of neurodegenerative disease

BRIDGET

Establishing efficient prevention strategies for dementia and Alzheimer's disease is a major health priority. Since the cascade of events leading to Alzheimer's disease begins many years before the disease is detected, efficient prevention should be initiated early.

This requires identifying individuals in the general population who are at high...

CO-desiGning demeNtia dIagnoSis ANd post-diagnostic CarE

COGNISANCE

People with dementia and their care partners are often dissatisfied with the process of diagnosis, communication and recommendations after diagnosis. We aim to design with people with dementia, their care partners and clinicians recommendations and campaigns for all concerned on how to improve diagnostic process and post-diagnostic care in Europe...

Deciphering Interactions of Acquired Risk Factors and ApoE-mediated Pathways in Alzheimer’s Disease

DACAPO-AD

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) imposes an enormous personal burden on patients and caregivers, as well as a tremendous socio-economic impact on society. However, there is a paucity of pharmaceutical or interventional strategies that have a proven impact on the incidence or progression of AD. One reason is that most models are based on familial (early...

Defining Genetic, Polygenic and Environmental Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease using multiple powerful cohorts, focussed Epigenetics and Stem cell metabolomics

PERADES

The PERADES Programme (Defining Genetic, Polygenic and Environmental Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease, using multiple powerful cohorts, focussed Epigenetics and Stem cell metabolomics) will find new susceptibility genes for early and late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. It will take all genetic findings and test for relationships with life- style...

Development of a Novel Multicellular In Vitro Model of Alzheimer’s disease-like Blood-Brain Barrier

NAB3

A striking challenge in diagnosis and therapy of neurodegenerative diseases is the design of drugs capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB), a tightly regulated barrier that prevents the passage of drugs from the blood to the brain. In vitro cellular BBB models are available, but they mimic only healthy conditions without taking into...

Diagnostic and prognostic precision medicine for behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia

DIPPA-FTD

The behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is a common cause of early-onset dementia that presents with changes in behavior and personality. It is often misdiagnosed and mistaken for a psychiatric disorder, such as depression or bipolar disorder. Unlike with Alzheimer’s disease, we still lack reliable tests that enable a diagnosis...

Early Detection of Alzheimer’s Disease Subtypes

E-DADS

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a global health burden. There are currently no treatments that prevent AD or modify the course of the disease. Recent work has identified several subtypes of Alzheimer’s disease that become apparent once clinical symptoms appear. These subtypes can guide improved treatment and care decisions. Here we aim to predict which...

Effect of early and adult-life stress on the brain epigenome: relevance for the occurrence of Alzheimer’s Disease and Diabetes-related dementia

EpiAD

Recent human epidemiological and animal experimentation studies have revealed that negative conditions occurring prenatally influence the appearance of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, some of which are in turn risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The aim of this proposal is to determine if and how early-life stress may precipitate...

EURO-FINGERS multimodal precision prevention toolbox for dementia in Alzheimer’s disease

EU-FINGERS

Prevention of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia is a global public health priority. EURO-FINGERS builds upon the successful experiences of two multimodal prevention trials: the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER) and the JPND-funded MIND-AD. The FINGER intervention trial showed that a...

From air pollution to brain pollution – novel biomarkers to unravel the link of air pollution and Alzheimer’s disease

ADAIR

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a devastating disorder without a cure. Recent research demonstrates a link between AD and exposure to high levels of air pollution, yet detailed understanding of the connection does not exist. Air pollution, a massive public health issue known to pose a major threat to humans, is an increasing global concern. Researchers...

Generation of Improved Cellular and Animal Models for Identification of Disease Phenotype and New Therapeutic Targets of Alzheimer’s Disease

MADGIC

The mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) have remained poorly understood while com- mon animal models have not helped in finding efficient therapies for the disease. This pro- ject aims to generate new human cellular models allowing for the purification of specific neural cell types involved in AD. We generate patient neural cells through...
