Research Projects

This database contains information on EU funded dementia research projects, undertaken since 2007. It is the product of a mapping exercise of European funding programmes for dementia research conducted by Alzheimer Europe in 2020. This database is not an exhaustive resource of information. It contains information about dementia research projects that are funded by European programmes including FP7, H2020, IMI, JPND, AAL and the third EU Health programme. The mapping exercise and database were expanded in 2025, to include projects funded under Horizon Europe (including IHI). For these projects, the database reports the maximum contribution from the European Commission rather than the total project budget, so funding figures may not be directly comparable across all entries.

Joint Action on Dementia 2015-2018

Joint Action on Dementia 2015-2018. The Joint Action will focus on two phases on work: approximately 12 months on developing a consensus on the best evidence of effective action in 4 key areas (diagnosis and post-diagnostic support; crisis and care coordination; quality of care in residential care settings; and dementia-friendly communities); and...

Large scale interactions in brain networks and their breakdown in brain diseases

BRAINSYNC

The long-term goal of this project is to understand how neuronal assemblies exchange information (functional or neuronal communication), and how variability in neuronal communication explains variability in behavioural performance, both in the intact and injured brain. Communication involves temporal interactions between neuronal assemblies either...

Large-scale and wide-band brain dynamics mediating memory consolidation in the freely moving rat

Wide-Band Ephys

Dementia is a major healthcare challenge worldwide due to its high incidence and its strong impact on the life quality of patients and on society as a whole. Development of treatments for the mitigation of memory impairment in patients with dementia has proven very challenging, partly due to our limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms of...

Membrane-active peptides across disciplines and continents: An integrated approach to find new strategies to fight bacteria, dengue virus and neurodegeneration

MEMPEPACROSS

Peptide-lipid interactions are critical in several biomedical matters that seem uncorrelated at a first glance. MEMPEPACROSS deals with some of these: 1) Lipid membrane-interactions are the key for the understanding of dengue virus assembly and can constitute a target for its inhibition. Viral hemorrhagic fever caused by dengue virus is a serious...

Memory Enhancing and Learning System

MEMBOOST

Advances in neuroscience have returned the focus on learning, placing the relationship between sleep and consolidation of memory at the centre of academic debate. There are two types of sleep: rapid eye movements and slow wave sleep (SWS). Although both types of sleep have been related to memory consolidation, accumulated evidence points more to...

Memory loss in Alzheimer disease: underlying mechanisms and therapeutic targets

MEMOSAD

MEMOSAD aims at defining the molecular mechanisms of Abeta- and Tau-induced synaptotoxicity and at developing disease-modifying therapeutics for the prevention of memory loss in Alzheimer disease (AD). Insoluble aggregates of the two proteins provide the pathological hallmarks of this incurable brain disorder. Early stage AD is characterized by a...

CRUCIAL

Vascular dementia and heart failure represent major health burden to morbidity, mortality and quality of life. Comorbidities (hypertension, aging, diabetes, etc.) affect all organs, but the brain and heart are especially sensitive to these chronic stresses resulting in cognitive impairment (a mental disorder) and heart failure (a non-mental...

Models of patient engagement for Alzheimer’s disease

MOPEAD

Dementia researchers are increasingly focusing their efforts on finding ways to prevent the onset of dementia symptoms in the first place, and for this they need to work with people who are still in the very earliest stages of the disease. The MOPEAD project aims to identify and test different models for engaging with this important group and...

BISCUITS

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and dementia is rapidly increasing worldwide and is therefore a major public health concern. Carbohydrate intake (40-80%) represents the main source of energy in most populations and the quality more than the quantity has a large effect on health. Recently, a...
