Research Projects

This database contains information on EU funded dementia research projects, undertaken since 2007. It is the product of a mapping exercise of European funding programmes for dementia research conducted by Alzheimer Europe in 2020. This database is not an exhaustive resource of information. It contains information about dementia research projects that are funded by European programmes including FP7, H2020, IMI, JPND, AAL and the third EU Health programme. The mapping exercise and database were expanded in 2025, to include projects funded under Horizon Europe (including IHI). For these projects, the database reports the maximum contribution from the European Commission rather than the total project budget, so funding figures may not be directly comparable across all entries.

Stability and dynamics at different spatial scales: From physiology to Alzheimer's degeneration

MacroStability

How neuronal circuits maintain the balance between stability and plasticity in a constantly changing environment remains one of the most fundamental questions in neuroscience. Empirical and theoretical studies suggest that homeostatic negative feedback mechanisms operate to stabilize the function of a system at a set point level of activity. While...

Support, Monitoring and Reminder Technology for Mild Dementia

SMART4MD

As Europe’s population is ageing, long-term care for elderly citizens will become an increasing cost for society. To manage this transition healthcare policies in the EU and individual Member States are heavily focussed on extending the independent life of the elderly, with the dual aim of increasing their quality of life and reducing the costs of...

Targeting Circadian Clock Dysfunction in Alzheimer’s Disease

TClock4AD

Recent Nobel Prize-winning discoveries on circadian clock (CC) have laid the foundation for ground-breaking approaches to treat many diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). AD is a current public health priority. Amplifying the demographic burden of the rising numbers of patients is the low success rate of AD therapies. Given that CC genes...

The origin and impact of impaired ubiquitin signaling in the degeneration of neurons

Ubi-Wan

Neurodegenerative diseases share similar hallmarks such as protein aggregation, suggesting that impaired protein degradation may be a common denominator. The major cellular pathways mediating protein degradation are the Ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) and autophagy, both regulated by ubiquitin signaling. However, aside from specific mutations in...

The Silent Phase of Alzheimer’s Disease: From Brain States to Homeostatic Failures

DormantAD

Neuronal circuits must balance stability and plasticity. How this balance is compromised in brain disorders remains one of the most fundamental questions in neuroscience. Pioneering studies in the field established that homeostatic mechanisms stabilize the function of a system at a set-point level of activity. Recently, we have identified bona fide...

THERAPEUTIC AND PREVENTIVE IMPACT OF NUTRITIONAL LIPIDS ON NEURONAL AND COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE IN AGING, ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AND VASCULAR DEMENTIA

LIPIDIDIET

Major objective: It is our aim to develop a lipid based diet that is able to delay or prevent onset of Alzheimer’s disease and related diseases and has a stabilizing effect on cognitive performance in aging. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that there is a large overlap between risk factor of these three diseases. Importantly, there is equally...

Time and experience dependent evolution of hippocampal memory codes

MemoryCodes

Following initial learning, information stored in memory undergoes a time- and experience-dependent evolution. Currently, the nature of this evolution at the neuronal ensemble level remains largely unknown. To obtain insight into this dynamic process there is a need to follow memory-associated neuronal representations in large populations of single...

Translational Research Network in Motor Disorder Rehabilitation: Advancing understanding of variability in motor control and learning, to enhance clinical practice

TReND

The theoretical understanding of human motor control and learning has a strong impact on the diagnosis and treatment of motor disorders, and vice versa. Recent progress has been made in the understanding of motor control and learning, particularly with respect to understanding the functional role of neuro-behavioural variability that is inherent to...

Uncovering molecular and cellular mechanisms of immune cell trafficking across the blood-CSF barrier in autoimmunity

CNS Hidden Door

Immune cells continuously traverse our body, crossing vascular and epithelial barriers; from lymphatic organs into the blood, and from the blood into various tissues for surveillance or to fight infection. However, the brain has long been considered an immune-privileged organ. Barriers protecting the brain against infection or harmful toxic agents...

Vascular Dementia: revealing the detrimental synergy between hypertension, micro-strokes and Neuro-Vascular Decoupling"

VD&NVD

Research in recent years has started to provide an alternative view to Alzheimer's etiology emphasizing the role of other factors such as inflammation and brain vascular alterations in the development of Alzheimer. Of major interest is the link between AD and hypertension, another global epidemic affecting millions of people worldwide. Hypertension...
