Research Projects

This database contains information on EU funded dementia research projects, undertaken since 2007. It is the product of a mapping exercise of European funding programmes for dementia research conducted by Alzheimer Europe in 2020. This database is not an exhaustive resource of information. It contains information about dementia research projects that are funded by European programmes including FP7, H2020, IMI, JPND, AAL and the third EU Health programme. The mapping exercise and database were expanded in 2025, to include projects funded under Horizon Europe (including IHI). For these projects, the database reports the maximum contribution from the European Commission rather than the total project budget, so funding figures may not be directly comparable across all entries.

How to best meet the needs of people with dementia with severe behavioural disturbances. Toward a respectful and cost-effective model

RECAGE

The RECAGE project will tackle one of the most challenging problem arising during the clinical course of dementia: the so-called Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). The current state-of-the-art of the treatment of these symptoms is still unsatisfactory and there are many unmet needs in this area. The major objective of the...

Impact of neuronal exosomes-delivered microRNA and proteins on the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease

EMIRAD

'Exosomes are small vesicles which mediate cell-cell communication by transporting across the extracellular environment specific “packages” of RNA and proteins. Importantly, exosomes carry translation initiation factors (TIFs) and miRNAs, a class of short non-coding RNAs with regulatory activity on the expression of the transcriptome of a cell. In...

IMplementation of quality indicators in PAlliative Care sTudy

IMPACT

New knowledge is not necessarily readily applied in medicine, even when there is evidence of its effectiveness. As a result of the gap between knowing and doing, policy makers, professional care providers, patients and their families have benefited too little from new developments. Implementation research has developed models for stepwise...

In-Touch: Implementation of a person-centered palliative care iNtervention To imprOve comfort, QUality of Life and social engagement of people with advanced dementia in Care Homes

In-Touch

Challenge. Caring for the increasing numbers of people across Europe with advanced dementia and palliative care needs who live in care homes is difficult and demanding. People with advanced dementia can be immobile, non-verbal and unable to take part in day-to-day activities. They can be unsettled or agitated, with low quality-of-life and elevated...

Inflammation and AD: modulating microglia function focussing on TREM2 and CD33

PHAGO

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related chronic neurodegenerative disease with four main pathological changes in the brain: amyloid plaques, fibrillary tau tangles, inflammation and neuronal loss. Phagocytes around amyloid plaques in late onset AD (LOAD) may be neurotoxic but have limited motility and phagocytic activity, suggesting a...

Inhibiting Misfolded protein PRopagation in Neurodegenerative Diseases

IMPRiND

Assemblies of tau and α-synuclein were shown to spread along interconnected neuronal networks suggesting broadly relevant therapeutic directions for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. This requires a pre-clinical stage of development that has yet to be met. The scale of neurodegenerative disease burden in Europe calls for an unprecedented...

Integration of AAL Components for Innovative Care Pathways

IntegrAAL

Internet-based and micro technologies have changed the way we live. But elderly people receiving care have not always benefited from these developments. IntegrAAL uses technology to help improve care for older people. Older people are often cared for by many different people, known as a circle of care. This circle may include informal carers as...

Interdisciplinary Network for Dementia Utilising Current Technology (INDUCT)

INDUCT

Dementia raises complex challenges for people with dementia, their families, and society. The European Parliament has called for investment in high quality, innovative technology research to improve dementia care but so far there has been little benefit because research has generally been limited, small scale and methodologically flawed. In...
