Research Projects

This database contains information on EU funded dementia research projects, undertaken since 2007. It is the product of a mapping exercise of European funding programmes for dementia research conducted by Alzheimer Europe in 2020. This database is not an exhaustive resource of information. It contains information about dementia research projects that are funded by European programmes including FP7, H2020, IMI, JPND, AAL and the third EU Health programme. The mapping exercise and database were expanded in 2025, to include projects funded under Horizon Europe (including IHI). For these projects, the database reports the maximum contribution from the European Commission rather than the total project budget, so funding figures may not be directly comparable across all entries.

In-Touch: Implementation of a person-centered palliative care iNtervention To imprOve comfort, QUality of Life and social engagement of people with advanced dementia in Care Homes

In-Touch

Challenge. Caring for the increasing numbers of people across Europe with advanced dementia and palliative care needs who live in care homes is difficult and demanding. People with advanced dementia can be immobile, non-verbal and unable to take part in day-to-day activities. They can be unsettled or agitated, with low quality-of-life and elevated...

Interdisciplinary Network for Dementia Utilising Current Technology (INDUCT)

INDUCT

Dementia raises complex challenges for people with dementia, their families, and society. The European Parliament has called for investment in high quality, innovative technology research to improve dementia care but so far there has been little benefit because research has generally been limited, small scale and methodologically flawed. In...

Janus Graphene supported Single atom catalysts for ultrasensitive cytokine point of care sensors

RESPONSE

Cytokines, such as TNF-, hold immense significance as protein biomarkers, pivotal for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic management across various clinical disorders like Alzheimers disease, sepsis, and cancer. Nonetheless, prevailing techniques like enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) prove to be...

Label-free single-molecule detection of complex biomolecule interactions in free motion

LABIMO

Dysregulated interactions between biomolecules can lead to changes in cell signalling and gene expression, both common drivers of human disease. A detailed understanding of these interactions is vital for drug development, often targeting such interactions for therapeutic effects. In this project, I aim to develop an optical microscopy tool to...

Large scale interactions in brain networks and their breakdown in brain diseases

BRAINSYNC

The long-term goal of this project is to understand how neuronal assemblies exchange information (functional or neuronal communication), and how variability in neuronal communication explains variability in behavioural performance, both in the intact and injured brain. Communication involves temporal interactions between neuronal assemblies either...

Nanosystems for the early Diagnosis of Neurodegenerative diseases

NADINE

Medical diagnosis is currently undergoing a major revolution due to the fast discovery of molecular biomarkers, and the development of multimodal “metabiomarker” signatures. Progress, however, is hindered by low abundance of many biomarkers of interest in body fluids, in absolute concentration and with regard to other biomolecules. The aim of the...
