The Turkish Alzheimer Association, in collaboration with its 21 member organisations, has launched the “Alz-Tag project” to enhance the quality of life for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. Supported by AGESA and the Civil Society Support Foundation (STDV), the project aims to directly benefit 575 patients. The Alz-Tag initiative uses Apple’s AirTag as a springboard for broader discussions on Alzheimer’s disease management and caregiver empowerment. In-person meetings are being held with patients and caregivers across seven cities: Istanbul, Adana, Antalya, Kayseri, Bursa and Denizli thank to the participation from all 21 member organisations across Turkey. The first session was held on 22 March in Bursa, followed by a second session scheduled on 26 April in Istanbul.

The programme centres on three core components designed to support both patients and caregivers:

1.Risk analysis & Educational workshops One-day workshops are organised in each city, bringing together 25 family caregivers per session. These sessions cover vital topics such as creating safe home environments, handling emergencies, and effectively communicating with individuals with dementia. The workshops are led by expert trainers specialised in neurology, geriatric care, and dementia communication.

2. Ongoing mentorship & Informational resources For six months, participants receive personalised mentorship through email and phone consultations. The project also provides informative guides and instructional videos on using technology, such as smart trackers, to prevent wandering and ensure patient safety.

3. Evaluation & Impact assessment At the end of the mentorship phase, caregivers offer feedback on their experiences, focusing on knowledge retention, the effectiveness of support received, and the role of technology in their caregiving journey. Additionally, a stress scale is used to measure emotional strain before and after the programme. What sets Alz-Tag apart is its unique blend of technological innovation and psychosocial support. By integrating smart tools with targeted training, the programme equips caregivers with practical strategies to reduce stress and enhance care. Alz-Tag aspires to become a model for dementia care throughout Turkey, the project also aims to promote research partnerships and contribute to shaping national dementia care policies.
