On 24 June 2026, Thessaloniki hosted the hybrid scientific meeting “Debates in Dementia Prevention – Part 1: Vascular Risk Factors”, bringing together leading scientists, healthcare professionals and participants both in person and online. The event was organised by the Panhellenic Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases, Alzheimer Hellas and the First Propedeutic Department of Internal Medicine of AHEPA University Hospital, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The meeting focused on one of the most important and increasingly recognised aspects of dementia prevention: the role of modifiable vascular risk factors. Hypertension, dyslipidaemia, obesity and diabetes were examined from different scientific perspectives, highlighting both the available evidence and areas where debate and further research remain necessary.
A distinctive feature of the meeting was its format, centred on 20 scientific debates. Rather than presenting prevention as a single, straightforward pathway, the sessions encouraged critical discussion and the exchange of different viewpoints. This approach underlined the complexity of dementia prevention and the need to integrate evidence from neurology, internal medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, epidemiology and other relevant fields.
The discussions also reinforced an important message: dementia prevention cannot be separated from broader efforts to promote cardiovascular and metabolic health throughout the life course. Identifying and managing vascular risk factors may offer an important opportunity to reduce the risk of cognitive decline, while also contributing to overall health and quality of life.
The hybrid format enabled wider participation and facilitated knowledge exchange beyond the physical meeting. The event also provided an opportunity for continuing medical education, with eight Continuing Medical Education credits awarded by the Panhellenic Medical Association.
The organisers warmly thank all speakers, moderators, participants and supporters who contributed to the success of the meeting. The event represents the first part of an ongoing initiative aimed at encouraging scientific dialogue and strengthening collective efforts towards dementia prevention.
