On 16 September 2026, the Icelandic Government published an Action Plan for People with Dementia 2026-2030, building on the work for the first national dementia strategy 2019-2025.
Work on updating the current action plan began in late 2025, in collaboration with a specialist from the Ministry of Health, Dr. Jon Snædal, a geriatrician, and Guðlaugur Eyjólfsson, Executive Director of Dementia Iceland. The plan was published for public comment on the government's consultation portal on 9 June 2026.
The new action plan takes into account the changes in focus that have occurred in recent years, with a strong emphasis now placed on prevention and early intervention. The plan outlines 27 scheduled actions and specifies who is responsible for their implementation. The actions are in the following six areas:
• Prevention
• Early intervention
• Increase in activity, day training, and respite programs
• Pharmacotherapy
• Increased public awareness of dementia
• Pending actions from the last action plan
