Green Care initiative offers nature-based activities for people with memory difficulties

17/03/2025

On 22 September (Neimënster Abbey, Luxembourg), a con-ference titled "Green Dementia Care – wie Menschen aufblü-hen" will bring together professionals and carers to discuss how nature-based interventions can support people with de-mentia. The event is part of the "Green Care" initiative, which runs from May to September 2025, offering guided walks and horticultural therapy workshops. Organised by the Info-Zenter Demenz in collaboration with Luxembourg Gardens and other partners, and supported by the Ministry of Family, Solidarity, Cohesion, and Refugee Accommodation, the initiative is part of the Luxembourg Ur-ban Garden (LUGA) project.

It includes:

• Horticultural therapy workshops, designed to ac-tively engage participants through sensory activities with plants and natural materials. These interactive sessions, led by a professional therapist, will be held in the municipal park at Villa Vauban, Luxembourg City.

• Guided walks in the sensory garden of Fonda-tion Pescatore, offering a structured yet relaxing experience focused on sensory stimulation and con-nection with nature.

• The conference on 22 September, focusing on the benefits of nature-based approaches in dementia care.

The workshops will take place on:

• 15 and 16 May (Flowers, blossoms, and wild herbs)

• 26 and 27 June (From meadow to hay)

• 18 and 19 September (Experiencing the garden through smell, taste, and touch).

The guided walks will be available on multiple dates in June and July, with sessions in German/Luxembourgish and French/Luxembourgish. Participation is free, and registration is available at demenz.lu

The initiative is part of the "VergissMeinNicht" campaign, which promotes awareness and support for people living with dementia through innovative care approaches. By fostering engagement with nature, Green Care aims to enhance quality of life and social inclusion for participants.
