On 5 October 2019, Alzheimer Croatia held its first Memory Run in the capital Zagreb, bringing together 400 participants. The 5-kilometer-long race began in the heart of the city and continued through the picturesque baroque Upper Town. This event attracted a great deal of public and media attention, raising public awareness of dementia and promoting Alzheimer Croatia, which, this year, marks its 20 anniversary of continually helping people with Alzheimer's and their family carers. In addition, the race aimed to promote a sporty and healthy lifestyle as a way to help prevent central nervous system diseases, and to gain new Dementia Friends.
The race was the final event in Alzheimer Croatia’s World Alzheimer's Month 2019 calendar, and its primary goal was to drew attention to the diseases that cause dementia. According to estimates, they affect around 100,000 people in Croatia.
This race, which will become an annual tradition, was organised by Alzheimer Croatia and the Sljeme Athletic Club, with the support of the City of Zagreb and numerous sponsors.
