The European Parliament’s health committee (ENVI) has voted to approve an amended Rapporteur’s Report for the forthcoming EU4Health programme. As part of the amendments to the Report, the committee supported the restoration of the EUR 9.4 billion budget (as originally proposed by the European Commission) for the programme. This figure compares to the reduced EUR 1.7 billion agreed by the European Council during its budget negotiations in the summer. Whilst neither dementia nor Alzheimer's disease was specifically mentioned in the Report (or the Compromise Amendments), neurological and/or neurodegenerative conditions were mentioned in Compromise Amendment 10, specifically in:
-
Amendment 10 Proposal for a regulation Recital 12
-
Amendment 10 Proposal for a regulation Recital 17
-
Amendment 10 Proposal for a regulation Recital 18
-
Amendment 10 Proposal for a regulation Recital 27.
Alzheimer Europe wrote to members of the European Alzheimer's Alliance (EAA) who sit on the ENVI committee, urging them to support Amendment 10, to provide a platform for dementia and Alzheimer’s to be prioritised in future EU health workstreams. The amended report now will be subject to approval by a Plenary vote of the European Parliament (expected to be in early November), after which the Parliament, Council and Commission will begin trilogue negotiations to finalise the programme.
