European Commissioner publishes Green Paper on Ageing

28/01/2021

The European Commission has launched its Green Paper on Ageing, beginning a policy debate on the challenges and opportunities of Europe's ageing society. The Green Paper outlines the impact of of demographic changes in the EU, examining its effect on both the economy and society. Furthermore, the Commission is inviting stakeholders to contribute to a public consultation, which will run for 12 weeks. The Green Paper identifies the need to introduce measures across a range of policy areas, including promoting healthy lifestyles, life long learning and strengthening health and care systems to provide care and support for a growing older population.

There are two specific references to dementia within the Green Paper, including in relation to the EU4Health programme, as well as the potential of life long learning to prevent cognitive decline and dementia. Following the consultation, the Commission will consider possible policy responses to reinforce efforts in Member States and regions to address the issues around ageing.
