The European Commission and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) have published Health at a Glance: Europe, a report which highlights key information about health across the EU and neighbouring countries.
The biennial report is broken down into different chapters, focused on different aspects of health (including health status, risk factors for health, healthcare expenditure and access to care), as well as a chapter dedicated to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2020 report includes some references and statistics relating to dementia, including:
-
Alzheimer’s and other dementias accounted for 5% of all deaths in 2017
-
The high prevalence of conditions such as dementia amongst long-term care residents made it more difficult to diagnose people with COVID‑19 at an early stage, with many cases identified too late
-
During the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine and smartphone‑based assessments appear to have helped with remote monitoring and care for people with dementia.
The Health at a Glance publication is the first step in the State of Health in the EU cycle, which is followed by Country Health Profiles and a Companion Report. These reports will published in 2021.
