Dementia in the MENA region: Gaps in research, care and data

21/05/2025

On 21 May, a team of researchers from Egypt published an article on dementia in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in the npj Dementia journal. They report that dementia cases in the region are projected to increase by 367% by 2050, making it the fastest-growing region globally. The authors conducted a narrative review of peer-reviewed articles and regional reports from 19 countries, analysing prevalence data, risk factors and health system challenges. They identify major limitations, including inconsistent diagnostic tools, small study sizes and gaps in epidemiological coverage, particularly in conflict-affected areas. The article highlights the need for large-scale, longitudinal studies, standardised cognitive assessments, improved training for healthcare workers and regionally adapted interventions. The authors conclude that dementia must be integrated into national health strategies through evidence-based reforms and regional collaboration.
