“Dementia and Brain Health in Women – Barriers and Opportunities” at the European Parliament

09/12/2025

On 9 December, MEP Nina Carberry and the  Dementia Research Network Ireland (DRNI) hosted the “Dementia and Brain Health in Women – Barriers and Opportunities” event at the European Parliament in Brussels. As women face a higher risk of dementia, the event highlighted underexamined biological differences such as hormones, genetics, brain structure and immune responses and their impact on research and care. The presentations explored how brain ageing and dementia may progress differently in women, from identifying sex specific risk factors to developing tailored diagnostics and treatments, with the aim of improving prevention and care strategies

Speakers included Professor Lorina Naci from Trinity College Dublin, Professor Sean Kennelly from Tallaght University Hospital, Dr Sean O’Dowd from the National Dementia Service Ireland, and Dr Tim Raemaekers from DG Research & Innovation. Representatives from Alzheimer Society of Ireland and Alzheimer Europe were also in attendance to support the event.

Nina Carberry MEP is a Co-Chair of the European Alzheimer's Alliance (EAA). Find out more about the EAA: https://www.alzheimer-europe.org/policy/european-alzheimers-alliance
