Throughout 2026, the Day Centre for Dementia “Panagia Vimatarissa” in Katerini (Greece) has continued to strengthen its presence in the local community through a diverse programme of information, awareness-raising, prevention and social activities. These initiatives reflect an approach to dementia care that extends beyond clinical services, emphasising education, early recognition, social participation and support for people living with dementia and their families.
An important part of the Centre’s work has been raising awareness among different groups within the community. In January, psychologists from the Centre visited the Evening Vocational High School of Katerini, where students were informed about the main symptoms of dementia, the importance of early recognition and current approaches to prevention. Practical physical exercise activities were also introduced, highlighting the contribution of an active and healthy lifestyle to physical and cognitive health.
The Centre also collaborated with local cultural associations, organising talks on dementia prevention, early intervention, clinical symptoms and recent developments in dementia management. Short memory screening tests were offered as part of one of these community activities, promoting greater awareness of cognitive health. Prevention has also been addressed through complementary health interventions. Free hearing assessments were provided at the Centre on two occasions, with 26 people examined by a specialized audiologist.
Beyond education and health promotion, the Centre places strong emphasis on social inclusion. Beneficiaries and staff participated in a pilgrimage excursion and later joined a cultural event at the 55th Olympus Festival. Such activities create opportunities for social interaction and participation in community life. These activities illustrate the Centre’s commitment to a community-based approach to dementia, combining specialized services with prevention, awareness, family support and meaningful social engagement.
