Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides has published a response to a written question from Olivier Chastel MEP (Belgium) about dementia and the WHO Global Status Report on the Public Health Response to Dementia.
In his question Mr Chastel asked specifically about:
- The Commission’s action in relation to research funding for dementia
- The added value of the Steering Committee on Health Prevention and Promotion compared to the expert group on dementia which the Commission wound up in 2018.
Commissioner Kyriakides’ response highlighted a number of areas of ongoing action at an EU level in relation to dementia, including:
- Continued funding opportunities for dementia research under the Horizon Europe research programme
- The potential European partnership on ‘Brain Health’ under Horizon Europe’s second Strategic Plan 2024‐2027
- The European Group of Governmental Experts on Dementia, which is coordinated by Alzheimer Europe.
In her response, the Commissioner also expressed her preference for a broader collaboration of national health ministries on all non-communicable diseases via the Steering Group on Promotion and Prevention, rather than individual disease-focused groups.
