The Bodrum Branch of the Turkish Alzheimer Association has taken an important step towards establishing a new Day Living Centre for people with dementia and their families in Bodrum, on Türkiye’s Aegean coast. The branch, established in 2024, has worked towards creating such a centre since its foundation. Its aim is to provide people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia with a safe and supportive environment where they can participate in rehabilitation, social activities and meaningful daily routines, while also giving family carers valuable time for rest and respite.
The project is being developed through cooperation between the Bodrum Branch of the Turkish Alzheimer Association, Bodrum Municipality and philanthropist Yunus Büyükkuşoğlu, whose financial support will help make the centre possible.
Planned on a 4,200 m² site, with approximately 2,400 m² of indoor space, the centre will include activity workshops, quiet rooms, exhibition and conference spaces, as well as accessible outdoor areas. The architectural design emphasises safe movement, connection with nature, social interaction and meaningful everyday activities.
Bodrum Branch President Assoc. Prof. Melek Kandemir Yılmaz emphasised that reducing the burden on family carers has been central to the branch’s vision from the beginning.
The initiative continues a model pioneered by the Turkish Alzheimer Association, which opened its first Alzheimer Day Living Centre in 2011. According to Association President Dilek Şahinöz, 33 such centres have since been established across Türkiye, with the Bodrum project set to become the 34th.
