On 11 January, Biogen announced the launch of a new virtual research study in collaboration with Apple. Using the Apple Watch and iPhone as platforms, Biogen will examine whether technologies such as these can be used to monitor cognitive performance and screen for cognitive decline over time. The study will be launched later this year, aiming to enrol participants of all ages to determine which digital biomarkers most effectively monitor cognitive performance across the lifespan, and whether they can identify early signs of mild cognitive impairment, which can foreshadow the development of dementia. The study has been designed to comply with data protection regulations and will ensure that data is encrypted and secured thoughout. To this end, participants will be able to withdraw from the study at any time, and will complete a consent form stating which types of data will be collected, as well as how they can be used and shared.
