The Alzheimer Society of Ireland participated in key events throughout June recognising the vital role of family carers

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI) had the privilege of participating in key events throughout June, recognising the vital role of family carers and the broader community’s commitment to supporting people living with dementia. Team ASI was honoured to be invited by President Michael D. Higgins to the community Garden Party at Áras an Uachtaráin (the official residence and principal workplace of the President of Ireland). This annual event celebrates the incredible work of individuals and organisations contributing to community projects and initiatives that align with the values of the Irish presidency. It was a wonderful opportunity for the team to personally thank President Higgins and his wife for their continued support, as well as to connect with other community groups across Ireland.

Additionally, to mark National Carers Week (9-16 June), which celebrates the invaluable role of family carers across Ireland, Lord Mayor of Dublin Emma Blain hosted a special afternoon tea at the Mansion House in Dublin (the official residence of the Lord Mayor of Dublin). The event honoured members of the Dementia Carers Campaign Network (DCCN) and the Dementia Research Advisory Team (DRAT), both of which are supported by The ASI. This occasion celebrated the dedication of family carers, who play an essential role in the care and support of people living with dementia. Staff from The ASI also attended the event.

The DCCN is a group of carers and former carers who advocate for improved services, support, and policies for those caring for people with dementia.

The DRAT consists of people living with dementia and family carers who collaborate with the research community to ensure the lived experience of dementia remains central to the research process. Led by Carers Alliance Ireland, National Carers Week recognises the invaluable work of family carers across Ireland. The ASI has been a proud partner of this initiative for over a decade.
