18/08/2019

Alzheimer Europe has joined with Age Platform Europe, Eurocarers and the European Institute of Women’s to issue a call to action on improved continence care in Europe.

Following a round-table discussion with the above organisation, facilitated by Essity, the organisations issued a joint call to action, outlining the scale of the problem in across Europe. The call to action notes that incontinence affects around 50 million people in Europe, as well as around 15 million informal carers who take care individuals who require some form of continence care.

The paper further highlights that for most people with incontinence, there is no cure. It therefore argues for accessible, person-centred provisions for the day-to-day management of incontinence to support both people living with the condition, as well as their carers. Specifically, it explains that improvements in service delivery for daily toileting and containment management can lead to significant increases in the quality of life of individuals and their carers, as well as delivering savings for health care systems.

The organisations call on the responsible stakeholders at a local, regional, national and European level to ensure that policies and operational decisions within their remits deliver person-centred care that helps to manage incontinence and prevent the potential consequences of suboptimal care, supporting quality of life.
