My name is Jari Puranen. I am 61 years old and live with my wife in Helsinki. Our family also includes two adult daughters, aged 28 and 30.

I was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia three years ago. The diagnosis brought everything to a halt and stirred up all kinds of emotions, but thanks to my wife’s invaluable support, I gradually found a new direction in my life. I was encouraged to participate in the peer support activities of a local memory association, and that marked the beginning of a new, meaningful phase in my life.

My illness cut short my career, after which I have actively participated in the memory association’s activities, which include, among other things, peer support meetings for working-age adults, an exercise group, a cultural club, and a memory choir that is close to my heart. These communities have brought friendship, joy, and new experiences into my life.

Travel is also an important part of my life. It has been wonderful to travel with my family, enjoy the company of loved ones, and discover new places and cultures. Shared experiences are even more precious.

I am proud to serve as a member of the European Working Group of People with Dementia (EWGPWD). It is important to me to give a voice to people with dementia and to promote their rights, inclusion, and quality of life. I believe that every person has the right to a meaningful and good life, regardless of their diagnosis.
