Research Projects

This database contains information on EU funded dementia research projects, undertaken since 2007. It is the product of a mapping exercise of European funding programmes for dementia research conducted by Alzheimer Europe in 2020. This database is not an exhaustive resource of information. It contains information about dementia research projects that are funded by European programmes including FP7, H2020, IMI, JPND, AAL and the third EU Health programme. The mapping exercise and database were expanded in 2025, to include projects funded under Horizon Europe (including IHI). For these projects, the database reports the maximum contribution from the European Commission rather than the total project budget, so funding figures may not be directly comparable across all entries.

Successful caregiver communication and everyday situation support in dementia care

SUCCESS

Due to growing life expectancy and unhealthy lifestyles, dementia is a fast growing chronic disease that affects the behaviour and communication abilities of people living with this neurological disorder. Caregivers are often challenged by this fact, which could lead to stress, helplessness, aggressive situations and caregiver burnout. The SUCCESS...

Synaptic circuit protection in Alzheimers’s disease (AD) and Huntingtion’s disease (HD): BDNF/TrkB and Arc signaling as rescue factors

CircProt

Alzheimer´s (AD) and Huntington´s disease (HD) result from the erroneous communication of neurons at synapses in different brain areas (neocortex, hippocampus, striatum). The protein BDNF regulates synaptic communication under healthy conditions. However, insufficient release of BDNF from neurons and defective BDNF signaling in target neurons...

THE PRPC / PDK1 / TACE SIGNALING AXIS AT THE CROSS-ROAD OF SEVERAL AGGREGATE-PRONE PROTEIN-ASSOCIATED NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES

PrPC&PDK1

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Prion, Parkinson's diseases, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Spino- cerebellar Ataxia and Fronto-temporal Dementia make up a group of pathologies with distinct etiologies and pathophysiological features characterized by the accumulation in the nervous system of abnormal proteins that are toxic for...

The use of computational techniques to Improve compliance to reminders within smart environments

REMIND

The aim of this Project is to create an International and Intersectoral network to facilitate the exchange of staff to progress developments in reminding technologies for persons with dementia which can be deployed in smart environments. The focus will be on developing staff and partner skills in the areas of user centered design and behavioral...

Transgenic dissection of the neural circuitry of memory and dementia

MECEDGE

Our memories are arguably what make us who we are, making dementia a particularly cruel disease. Decades of research have revealed that two interconnected brain regions, the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) and hippocampus (HP), are required for successful spatial memory formation in mammals. Each region contains specialized neurons that fire...

Virtual and memory adaptable spaces creating stimuli for the senses in ageing people with dementia

SENSE-GARDEN

There are 47 million people living with dementia worldwide and expected to increase to 131 million by 2050. A person with dementia experiences loss of function, especially memory, eventually affecting verbal communication and ultimately creating disconnection from the close ones such as family and friends. The SENSE-GARDEN project will create rooms...

VPH Dementia Research Enabled by IT

VPH-DARE@IT

The DementiA Research Enabled by IT project responds to the European Parliament's 2011 resolution for a European Initiative on Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, and the EU Year of the Brain 2014 Initiative. It delivers the first patient-specific predictive models for early differential diagnosis of dementias and their evolution. Its...
