Doppelt fremd /doublement étranger (CH)

Title/name of initiative:

“Doppelt fremd” [Dementia and migration – example of Italians with dementia in Switzerland] by the Swiss Red Cross

Type of initiative:

Printed material

Dementia is a disease that fundamentally changes a person's personality and behaviour. Relatives of people with dementia often feel left alone. Migrants can be even more affected by this disease if they are not familiar with the Swiss healthcare system and if specialists do not recognise their needs enough and respond to them, they then become "doubly strangers".

This brochure aims to remedy this situation: it is based on the results of a study supported by the Swiss Red Cross which examined the effects of dementia on the lives of Italian migrants. The brochure provides numerous migration-specific recommendations for action for experts on training and further education, on recording the biographies and living conditions of migrants and their concerns. Good practice examples from Germany and abroad are also included. Portraits of affected migrants round off the brochure.
