Research Projects

This database contains information on EU funded dementia research projects, undertaken since 2007. It is the product of a mapping exercise of European funding programmes for dementia research conducted by Alzheimer Europe in 2020. This database is not an exhaustive resource of information. It contains information about dementia research projects that are funded by European programmes including FP7, H2020, IMI, JPND, AAL and the third EU Health programme. The mapping exercise and database were expanded in 2025, to include projects funded under Horizon Europe (including IHI). For these projects, the database reports the maximum contribution from the European Commission rather than the total project budget, so funding figures may not be directly comparable across all entries.

Innate Immune Activation in Neurodegenerative Disease

InCure

The mammalian central nervous system is an intricate and fragile structure which on one hand is open to change in order to store information, but at the same time is vulnerable to damage from injury, pathogen invasion or neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). Microglia, representing the brain`s innate immune system, execute a number of physiological...

Innovative Midlife Intervention for Dementia deterrence

IN-MINDD

The European costs of dementia were estimated €177 billion and there is a growing gap between burden and budget. The debilitation associated with dementia makes it the most feared of conditions related to ageing . Modelling studies have estimated that if obesity rates dropped by 5%, dementia prevalence rates would be lower by 6% and a decline in...

Insulin resistance and Tauopathy : Insights from Drosophila models and human brain samples

AlzDiabetes

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder affecting about 20 million people worldwide. Although aging is considered to be the most important risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, growing evidence from epidemiological studies suggest that type-2 diabetes (T2DM) increases the risk factor of AD. While compelling evidence...

Integrated simulations of active emulsions in complex environments

EmulSim

Biological cells consist of a myriad of interacting biomolecules that collectively arrange in stable structures. For example, molecules undergo phase separation to form so-called biomolecular condensates. We now know that malfunctioning condensates can cause diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and cancer. Yet, we do not understand how...

Integration of AAL Components for Innovative Care Pathways

IntegrAAL

Internet-based and micro technologies have changed the way we live. But elderly people receiving care have not always benefited from these developments. IntegrAAL uses technology to help improve care for older people. Older people are often cared for by many different people, known as a circle of care. This circle may include informal carers as...

Integrative structural biology of pathological tau protein, an appealing therapeutic target for Alzheimer´s disease modifying drugs

InterTAU

There is an enormous and unmet medical need to find efficient methods of prevention, diagnosis and disease-modifying therapies for tauopathies, including Alzheimer’s disease. The common molecular denominator of tauopathies are pathological forms of tau protein. Tau pathology relates to conformational changes during oligomerization and assembly...
