The prevalence of dementia in Europe
Accurate, up-to-date estimates of dementia prevalence support research and health and social policy. Alzheimer Europe’s Prevalence of Dementia in Europe 2025 report provides estimates for all EU27 countries and for the twelve non-EU countries where we have member associations, building on the Dementia in Europe Yearbook 2019.
The report estimated prevalence for women and men across five-year age bands and applied these rates to UN World Population Prospects 2024 population data for 2025 and 2050. Key findings include:
- in 2025, an estimated 9,065,706 people with dementia live in EU27 countries and 12,122,979 in EU27 and non-EU countries combined
- by 2050, an estimated 14,335,788 people with dementia will live in EU27 countries and 19,905,856 in EU27 and non-EU countries combined
- in 2025, women continue to be disproportionately affected by dementia, with 8,009,313 women and 4,113,666 men living with dementia in EU27 and non-EU countries combined
- by 2050, the number of people with dementia in EU27 and non-EU countries combined will increase by 58% in the EU27 countries and by 64% across EU27 and non-EU countries combined.
To help people understand and use the prevalence estimates in their work, Alzheimer Europe has developed a series of interactive data visualisations. On this page, you will find four interactive data visualisations, showing:
- the total number of people with dementia, for the selected country and sex, at five-year intervals
- the number of people with dementia broken down by age group, for the selected country and sex, at five-year intervals
- the change in the number of people with dementia between 2025 and 2050, broken down by age group, for the selected country and sex
- a map displaying dementia prevalence rates, for the selected country and sex, at five-year intervals.
Visitors can switch countries, sex and years, and can export what they see (copy, CSV and image downloads) for reuse in presentations and reports. For methods and details on how the prevalence rates were calculated, see Prevalence of Dementia in Europe 2025.
When using exported images or data in presentations or publications, please cite the report (include reference/https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18339752) and, where possible, include a hyperlink to this webpage.
About these visualisations: The charts are generated in your browser by a script developed with large language model assistance and have been validated against the data in the report. The script uses an embedded dataset from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024, extracted using a Python script, and applies the published prevalence rates to produce the figures shown. Calculations are performed without rounding and are only rounded for display in headline summaries and labels. As a result, totals may differ from the report tables by 1 in some cases.
