Research Projects

This database contains information on EU funded dementia research projects, undertaken since 2007. It is the product of a mapping exercise of European funding programmes for dementia research conducted by Alzheimer Europe in 2020. This database is not an exhaustive resource of information. It contains information about dementia research projects that are funded by European programmes including FP7, H2020, IMI, JPND, AAL and the third EU Health programme. The mapping exercise and database were expanded in 2025, to include projects funded under Horizon Europe (including IHI). For these projects, the database reports the maximum contribution from the European Commission rather than the total project budget, so funding figures may not be directly comparable across all entries.

Identifying preclinical Alzheimer´s disease in the community using a panel of biomarkers among individuals with Subjective Memory Complaints

IPACBIS

The dementia epidemic is a growing socio-economical problem in developed countries, including Europe, mainly due to aged population. Alzheimer´s disease (AD), the leading cause of dementia, has currently no prevention or cure. Identifying AD at early stages will likely improve the chances of developing an effective therapy. AD-related changes can...

Imaging synaptic contributors to dementia

ALZSYN

Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of dementia in older people, is a devastating condition that is becoming a public health crisis as our population ages. Despite great progress recently in Alzheimer’s disease research, we have no disease modifying drugs and a decade with a 99.6% failure rate of clinical trials attempting to treat the...

Immune checkpoint blockade for fighting Alzheimer’s disease

ImmuneCheckpointsAD

Understanding, and ultimately treating Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a major need in Western countries. Currently, there is no available treatment to modify the disease. Several pioneering discoveries made by my team, attributing a key role to systemic immunity in brain maintenance and repair, and identifying unique interface between the brain’s...

Immunological mechanisms of post-stroke dysfunction and recovery of neurovascular coupling

VasoRecovery

Ischemic stroke is one of the most common causes of disability and death in the EU. Improvements in treatment and prevention of ischemic stroke have reduced this burden, but consequently, patients living with chronic post-stroke conditions are increasing in number. Addressing this emergent public health problem will require novel rehabilitation...

Impact of Environmental Tobacco Smoke on Incidence and Outcomes of Dementia.

DEMETS

Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) remains prevalent globally. Its association with dementia is unclear. We propose to investigate impacts of ETS on dementia risk and outcomes, and examine levels and determinants of ETS exposure post dementia. In a case-control study in the UK we will recruit 150 elders aged>=75 years with newly diagnosed dementia...

Impact of exposure to chemicals to the onset and progression of Lewy Body Dementia

FRANKIE

With aging, the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases is increasing. Clinical manifestations of neurodegenerative disease often result in dementia, a group of symptoms including loss of memory and impaired cognitive functions that have serious consequences for the wellbeing of aging individuals and society. Dementia is a syndrome of many diseases...

Impact of Lipid Cell Composition on Beta-Amyloid Aggregation: Exploring Novel Therapeutic Targets for Alzheimer's Disease

ABlina

The ABlina project aims to study how cell membrane lipid composition affects the formation and deposition of beta amyloid (Aβ) aggregates. To achieve this, Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations will be performed on membranes with varying lipid compositions, focusing on models that mimic senescent and Alzheimer's disease cells. The data generated will...

Impact of neuronal exosomes-delivered microRNA and proteins on the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease

EMIRAD

'Exosomes are small vesicles which mediate cell-cell communication by transporting across the extracellular environment specific “packages” of RNA and proteins. Importantly, exosomes carry translation initiation factors (TIFs) and miRNAs, a class of short non-coding RNAs with regulatory activity on the expression of the transcriptome of a cell. In...

New knowledge is not necessarily readily applied in medicine, even when there is evidence of its effectiveness. As a result of the gap between knowing and doing, policy makers, professional care providers, patients and their families have benefited too little from new developments. Implementation research has developed models for stepwise...
