To mark World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September and World Alzheimer’s Week, Alzheimer Latvia (LAA) carried out a range of activities as part of the activities organised by the Riga City Municipality. The aim was to provide people with clear and practical information about dementia, its risk factors, and ways to support brain health.
As part of LAA’s project “One Step Ahead of Dementia – Understanding, Action, Support”, information about dementia and dementia prevention has been available in 27 Riga libraries since June. LAA provided information stands, posters and thousands of free informational materials, giving library visitors the opportunity to learn more about maintaining memory and cognitive health.
A particular new feature was the opportunity for library visitors to try SmartBrain, a digital cognitive training programme. LAA made the programme available on library computers, allowing people to try a range of free exercises for attention, memory, thinking and other cognitive abilities.
During Alzheimer’s Week, LAA also organised a total of seven educational meetings and lectures in libraries and senior communities, with more than 200 participants. The sessions focused on how to recognise early changes in cognitive abilities, which lifestyle factors may influence dementia risk, and what individuals can do to support their own brain health.
These activities are part of LAA’s ongoing work to make the conversation about dementia in Latvia more open and accessible, and to ensure that people have not only information about prevention, but also concrete, simple and practical tools they can use in everyday life.
