Alzheimer Bulgaria takes part in a regular running event in order to spread awareness

03/10/2020

On 3 October, in one of the parks in the city of Sofia, Alzheimer Bulgaria took part in a regular Saturday 5km running event, held by “5kmrun”, to help spread the idea of preventive healthcare through sport. The slogan of the event was “Let’s outrun dementia together”. This is the second time that Alzheimer Bulgaria has participated in the 5km run, this time by way of celebrating World Alzheimer’s Day, the International Day of Older Persons and the World Mental Health Day. The initiative is aimed at supporting regular running in the park, to try to help prevent dementia, slow the pace of the illness, and to socialise. Moreover, the event helps to spread awareness of the importance of regular physical activity for prevention.

A great number of the runners supported the idea by wearing white T-shirts bearing the slogan “Let’s outrun dementia together”. Visitors to the event got the opportunity to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, as well as ways to help prevent them. They also learned more about the work of Alzheimer Bulgaria. Runners were greeted with a lot of applause at the finish line, and the event ended with big smiles and a positive spirit. The whole initiative received a lot of help from other organisations and projects, such as “5kmrun”, UCB and EGIS Pharmaceuticals, volunteers from “Timeheroes” and “The European Solidarity Corps”, as well as the volunteers of Alzheimer Bulgaria. Alzheimer Bulgaria will continue its work and hope that next year there will be even more people engaged in the problem.
