My name is Timo Pässilä. I live in Finland in the Kymenlaakso region, in the city of Kouvola. I am retired. I got involved with the Kouvola Memory Association and the Finnish Muistiliitto activities when my wife Leena was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia and Parkinson’s in 2022. We have also participated in seminars for gerontological researchers as experienced experts. Our family includes adult children with their families and a few grandchildren.
Even before my wife got sick, both her parents and my own father also had dementia. My close circle also includes numerous people and their spouses with dementia. My sister lives in a care home; she has a developmental disability.
From these experiences, I have gained extensive insight into the lives of people with dementia.
Half of my career has been in Finnish basic education: as a principal, an educator for other principals, and development consultant. I have also worked in national school administration. Together with my wife, I have authored several books focused on the professional development of teachers and principals. The other half of my career I have spent as a pioneer in digital media and in development roles. Together with my team I have developed, among other things, multilingual learning platforms for sectors including construction and health care (hygiene practices in hospitals and care homes).
