Alzheimer’s Disease pathology within the ageing physiology

Everybody grows old. But while some people grow old in good health, others experience severe disease, such as Alzheimer's disease. Recent research demonstrates that Alzheimer's disease shares several features with the ageing process and suggests that the pathology is the consequence of something that goes wrong during physiological ageing. Researchers involved in ADAGE (Alzheimer's Disease+AGEing) will use the most advanced biomolecular approaches to compare Alzheimer's disease patients with people who have stayed healthy in old age, including nonagenarians and centenarians. In this way, researchers aim to identify early biomarkers of the disease that will provide new diagnostic, pro- gnostic and therapeutic targets. The ADAGE consortium includes researchers from four institutes in three EU countries (Italy, the UK and Sweden), and will also collaborate with three additional teams in Italy and Switzerland.
