Nina Carberry MEP calls for prioritisation of dementia during European Parliament Plenary Session

14/09/2026

Co-Chair of the European Alzheimer’s Alliance (EAA), Nina Carberry MEP (EPP, Ireland), has made an intervention during the European Parliament Plenary Session calling for dementia to be prioritised at an EU level.
During her intervention, she noted that September is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, as well as highlighting that 9 million people currently live with dementia in the EU, with the number rising to 14.3 million by 2050 – an increase of 60%.
Additionally, she highlighted the recent Alzheimer's Europe exhibition and the engagement of the “FTD brothers” in the European Parliament, which conveyed to President Metsola and EU Commissioners that the time for action on dementia is now.
She highlighted that many actions were taking place across research, health, data sharing, prevention and care but that required an EU level plan, with dedicated funding, to coordinate different aspects.
She concluded by noting that the cost of dementia is already significant but that the cost of inaction from this point forward will be far greater.
