A new podcast brings together two European dementia research projects to explore the diversity of dementia and the importance of earlier and more accurate diagnosis.
The episode “Understanding dementia beyond Alzheimer’s disease”, brings together the EU-funded PREDICT-FTD and DORIAN GRAY projects. The discussion is moderated by Cindy Birck, Research Lead at Alzheimer Europe and features Laura Ziccardi from Sapienza Università di Roma and Sant’Andrea University Hospital, and Sergi Borrego from Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.
The 13-minute episode was released on 1 September 2026 as part of the Cardio Talk Latest Research podcast. The release coincides with World Alzheimer’s Month, which takes place every September and brings global attention to Alzheimer’s disease and all types of dementia.
The conversation highlights that dementia encompasses a wide range of diseases, with different symptoms, causes and challenges. It looks at why recognising these differences is essential for improving diagnosis and developing more personalised approaches to prevention and care.
The podcast also showcases how European research is contributing to this effort. PREDICTFTD is working to improve the early and accurate diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, including through the development of biomarkers and tools that could help identify the underlying pathology. DORIAN GRAY, meanwhile, is investigating the links between cardiovascular disease and mild cognitive impairment. The EU-funded project aims to improve risk stratification, prevention and management of cognitive decline by combining clinical information with real-world data and digital technologies, including artificial intelligence.
