The educational programme “I’m learning about Alzheimer’s disease” was held in the region of Heraklion (Crete) by the Heraklion Association for Alzheimer’s disease and Healthy Ageing (ALLILENGII), to raise awareness and inform children about issues that concern our society. The presentations were attended by primary students from 5th and 6th grade from schools within the city of Heraklion, as well as from nearby cities and villages. The programme was implemented by psychologists from ALLILENGII. It was interactive and based on the participation of the children, who watched it attentively, answered questions and played games. This programme aims to fill the gap that exists in information materials for children, regarding dementia.
The necessity for such an activity arises from the fact that, at the moment, in Greece, there are about 200,000 people with Alzheimer's disease, with this number expected to increase dramatically in the future. Additionally, there are 58 million people living with dementia worldwide. The main objective of the programme is to explain to children, through simple activities and games, the special characteristics of dementia and how it affects those living with the condition, It is hoped this will help strengthen family ties, for example with grandparents, as well as teaching children how about dementia prevention. The educational programme took place in 23 primary schools between January and March 2025, and will continue in high schools from September 2025.
