French Government launches neurodegenerative diseases strategy

04/09/2025

The French Government has launched a national neurodegenerative strategy 2025-2030, aiming to support the approx. 1.5 million people affected by neurodegenerative diseases (including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and related diseases) living in France. The strategy notes that by 2050, the number of people with neurodegenerative diseases is expected to double.

Supported by the Ministries of Health, Autonomy, Disability and Higher Education, the new strategy contains 37 measures, across the following six priority areas relating to prevention, care and support, and research:

• Priority area 1: Inform and change perceptions – Consider how to adapt society to accommodate the growing number of people with cognitive disorders.

• Priority area 2: Prevent and detect earlier – Prevent and detect neurodegenerative diseases early in order to ensure better guidance as soon as possible.

• Priority area 3: Improve care and support carers – Adapt the care of cognitive disorders and meet the needs of carers.

• Priority area 4: Strengthen home support – Make the shift to home care a reality by enabling all people to receive support according to their needs.

• Priority area 5: Meeting complex needs in institutions – Specialised care and technical skills for complex disorders.

• Priority area 6: Stimulating research and innovation – Making France a world leader in research and innovation.
