France Alzheimer sounds the alarm on the French Government’s inaction regarding the country's national strategy on neurodegenerative diseases

France Alzheimer is part of a collective of organisations working in the area of neurodegenerative diseases, which is sounding the alarm on the French Government’s inaction, stressing "it has gone on long enough!"

After five years of waiting and one year on from its launch, the country's national strategy on neurodegenerative diseases is still at a standstill:

  • The strategic committee has still not met.
  • There is still no effective steering.
  • There is still no clearly identified budget.

In the meantime, charities and NGOs are being called upon to carry out work presented as contributing to the implementation of the strategy, but which remains peripheral in relation to the fundamental issues at stake.

"We refuse to continue to endorse this charade of consultation, which gives the illusion that the strategy is moving forward. We will not be the bit-players in a public policy lacking in resources" they say.

With nearly 4 million French people – those affected by the disease and their carers – being directly impacted today, and bearing in mind that this figure could rise to nearly 6 million by 2050, “the time for announcements is over”, they urge.

They demand action, a timetable and resources.
