Two members of the FluiDx-AD Public Advisory Board met for an online consultation to discuss ethical guidance for the use of fluid-based biomarkers in the general community. The FluiDx-AD Public Advisory Board have previously tested and advised upon biomarker testing equipment and considered the findings of a rapid review exploring ethical and social issues linked to the use of fluid-based biomarkers. The project now seeks to build on feedback obtained to generate an ethical guide that would support the implementation of biomarkers in the real-world setting.
The group considered the overall pathway and important considerations at each stage (pre-testing, during testing, feedback of results and long-term follow-up) and debated potential pros and cons and ethical issues or considerations that might arise at each stage. It was noted that the testing context is highly influential, and future consultations will explore whether there are differences in perspectives between resource rich and resource poor settings. Learning will be synthesised with previous consultation feedback to generate minimal standards or criteria to optimally guide implementation.
