The Association Comprendre la Maladie d'Alzheimer (ACMA), founded in France in 2016, is committed to raising awareness of Alzheimer's disease and related conditions in the African community. It fights the stigma surrounding those affected, providing information about risk factors and supporting patients and their carers and families. ACMA also promotes the importance of enabling people with dementia to remain in Africa with their loved ones, rather than bringing them to France. ACMA France works closely with its branches in Africa, ACMA Cameroon (based in Yaoundé) and ACMA Mali (based in Bamako).
In partnership with France Alzheimer and Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), ACMA is helping to develop French-language round tables bringing together neurologists, geriatricians and psychiatrists from Africa and elsewhere. The ACMA associations play a key role in raising awareness and reducing the stigma attached to Alzheimer's disease, through a variety of events, including seminars, information stands, psychological support, training for family carers, etc. ACMA is organising a Gala evening on Saturday 3 May 2025, to raise funds to help build a memory and cardiology centre in Douala, Cameroon, and to develop the ‘Alzheimer Immigration’ programme.
