Maartje Schermer is professor of Philosophy of medicine and bioethics, and the head of the section Medical ethics, philosophy and history of medicine at Erasmus MC University Medical Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Maartje has a background in Medicine (MD) and Philosophy (MA, PhD). She has conducted and led numerous multi-disciplinary research projects on various bioethical topics, including the conceptualization of Alzheimer’s disease, ethical issues in Alzheimer’s research and the meaning of ‘the good life’ for patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Maartje also teaches medical ethics in the medical curriculum of Erasmus MC, and advices the Dutch government on bioethical issues, as a member of the Health Council of the Netherlands.
Maartje's research is funded by the Erasmus University, the Dutch Research Council and ZonMW. She has no financial or other ties to pharmaceutical companies or other parties with particular interests in the Alzheimer field.
