About
John Keady is Professor of Older People's Mental Health Nursing, a joint appointment between The University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. John completed his mental health nurse training in 1986 and worked in dementia care in a variety of settings and clinical appointments following qualification, including as a community mental health nurse with people with dementia and their families in Meirionnydd, North Wales. During the 1990s, John completed a part-time post graduate Diploma in Gerontology at the University of Wales, Bangor and his part-time PhD in 1999 at the same university under the supervision of Professor Mike Nolan. His PhD was focused on a social construction of dementia based on the lived experiences of people with dementia and family carers.
Together with Professor Phyllis ‘Penny’ Braudy Harris in the USA, John was the founding co-editor of the Sage journal ‘Dementia: the international journal of social research and practice’ with the first edition published in 2002. John and Penny undertook this role together until 2018 when the journal was firmly established in the field. Since moving into research and education in the mid-1990s, John has supervised a number of PhDs in dementia care and has written numerous peer-reviewed and practice-based articles on the topic area.
In 2018, John led and co-edited the first book in the world on social research methods in dementia which was edited alongside a person living with dementia [Keady, J., Hydén, L-C., Johnson, A., and Swarbrick, C. John has also held a number of competitively won research grants over the years as either lead or co-investigator and has received funding from many different sources, including the NIHR, ESRC, Alzheimer’s Society and BUPA, for example. John is part of the NIHR School for Social Care Research (Manchester) and is currently a NIHR Senior Fellow.
